Easy Apple Pie from Scratch-ish — Made with Our Original Bread Mix
The ultimate indulgence for me is an Apple Pie. I don't know if it's the buttery pastry, the cinnamon, or the combination of soft warm apple with a crisp, crunchy crumble on top — but it is, without question, the best dessert ever made. So naturally, I had to make a version using our baking mixes.
The Original Bread Mix is the one to use here. It makes the most perfect crumble topping — buttery, crunchy, and just slightly sweet. It's the recipe to whip up when you have guests and want to look like a complete pro with minimal effort. Who could seriously resist a slice of warm Apple Pie with a crunchy topping and a scoop of ice cream?
Fresh Apples vs Tinned Apples
I'll be honest — I don't mind tinned apples at all. I know a lot of people swear by fresh, and you absolutely can't beat a fresh apple on any given day. But for ease and speed, tinned apples have a very well-earned spot in my pantry. Both work beautifully in this recipe — it just comes down to how much time you have.
If Using Fresh Apples
I like to use two different varieties — some sweet, some tangy — for the best flavour. Here's how to prep them:
- Peel and thinly slice your apples.
- Add to a bowl with ready-made cinnamon sugar and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional) and toss to combine.
- Bake at 200°C for about 30 minutes, tossing in between so they don't burn. They'll soften and start to caramelise beautifully.
This step pre-cooks the apples so you get perfectly soft, caramelised fruit in your pie — nothing worse than a crunchy apple in a warm crumble!
What You'll Need
- 8–10 fresh apples, peeled and sliced — or 2 tins of apple
- 4 tablespoons soft, room temperature butter
- Ready-made cinnamon sugar (cinnamon and sugar mixed together)
- ½ pouch Flour and Dough Original Bread Baking Mix
Makes a medium Apple Pie — 4–6 servings.
Method
- Preheat your oven to 200°C.
- If using fresh apples: bake as per the method above for 30 minutes, tossing in between. Once done, pour into your ovenproof dish and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar to taste. I have a very heavy hand here — no apologies.
- If using tinned apples: pour into a bowl, add cinnamon sugar to your liking, and transfer to your ovenproof dish.
- In a separate bowl, mix half a pouch of Original Bread Mix with the soft butter and 2 tablespoons of cinnamon sugar. Use your fingertips to rub everything together until you have a crumbly, sandy mixture — get in there with your hands, it's the best way!
- Sprinkle the crumble mixture evenly over the apples, covering them completely.
- Bake for 30 minutes until the topping is golden and crunchy and the apple filling is bubbling underneath. If the top is browning too quickly, lay a piece of tin foil over it and continue baking until the sugar has melted through.
- Remove from the oven and serve warm with whipped cream, ice cream, or both. It will be hot — use your discretion!
Tips
- Two apple varieties give the best flavour — one sweet (like Fuji or Gala) and one tangy (like Granny Smith).
- Don't skip pre-cooking fresh apples — it guarantees soft, perfectly cooked fruit every time.
- Tinned apples are a completely valid shortcut — they're already soft and save you 30 minutes.
- Heavy hand with the cinnamon sugar — this is not the time to be shy.
- Cover with tin foil if the crumble browns before the apples are fully heated through.
- Serve immediately — this is at its absolute best warm from the oven.
