It's Time for Soup and Bread — A Love Story
I love winter. I love the rain. I love sitting by the fire with something warm in my hands. But most of all — I love soup.
Soup, for me, is the soul of comfort food. From hearty vegetable to a chilled tomato soup on a warm day, I eat it all and I love it all. And no bowl of soup is complete without the perfect bread to dunk into it.
The Story That Started It All
Once upon a time, my husband and I had a client we were building a house for. It was a Friday night, it was raining, and they — being the young, fun type we loved spending time with after a long day on a construction site — asked what we were doing for dinner.
My husband looked at me sheepishly. He knew exactly what was coming.
"Soup and bread," he said. Beer bread, to be precise — the exact Beer Bread Baking Mix you'll find right here on the Flour and Dough site.
They laughed. On a Friday night — soup?
Here's the best part of the story: it was summer. A small shower had come through to cool everyone down and was gone by the next morning. And there we were, soup and beer bread on a Friday summer evening, completely unapologetic about it.
To this day, whenever we talk to them or to anyone who knows us, this story comes up. My husband has since learned to embrace it — when it rains, or even looks like it might rain, he gets soup. He is more than welcome to go grab McDonald's instead. Just saying.
Why Bread Makes the Soup
My soup-making skills have become genuinely impressive over the years — slow cooker, pressure cooker, one pot on the stove — I can do them all without fail. But every single one of them deserves a proper dunking bread alongside it.
Every Flour and Dough baking mix works beautifully with soup. Here's how I think about pairing them:
- Herb and Garlic Beer Bread Mix — the classic. Bold, flavourful, and absolutely perfect alongside a hearty vegetable or tomato soup. This is the one from the story.
- Oregano Garlic Sage and Rosemary Beer Bread Mix — incredible with a rich pumpkin or butternut soup. The herbs complement the sweetness of the squash perfectly.
- Rosemary Garlic and Thyme Keto Loaf — a lighter, low carb option that pairs beautifully with a creamy cauliflower or leek and potato soup.
- Original Nut Flour Loaf — neutral and versatile, perfect when you want the soup to be the star and the bread to simply be the perfect vehicle for dunking.
- Chilli Garlic Beer Bread Mix — for when you want a little heat alongside a tomato or lentil soup. Absolutely next level.
Soup Season is Here
Winter is the time for me to embrace my skills and make pot after pot of soup. There is nothing better than a warm kitchen, something bubbling on the stove, and a fresh loaf of bread cooling on the bench.
