Low Carb Keto Burger Buns — Made with Flour and Dough Baking Mixes
Sometimes you just need a change. A change from the regular slice of bread — and even though these taste the same, something about the fact that they look different makes all the difference. A bun just hits differently.
The good news is that making these keto burger buns is dead easy. A handful of quick steps and you'll have beautiful, golden buns ready to go. They hold together perfectly when adding a burger patty, pair beautifully with your favourite toppings, and are absolutely incredible when grilled with cheese on top. This is one of those ideas you just have to try — and it will not fail you.
Which Mix to Use
I've used all 3 keto baking mixes from the Flour and Dough range to make these buns and they all work perfectly. It really comes down to what you're after:
- Original Nut Flour Baking Mix — neutral flavour, perfect for burger buns
- Rosemary Garlic and Thyme Baking Mix — incredible with cheese and savoury toppings
- Pumpkin and Cashew Baking Mix — slightly sweeter, great with smashed avo or eggs
This recipe makes approximately 6 buns at regular burger bun size.
What You'll Need
- 1 x Flour and Dough Keto Baking Mix of your choice
- 2 tablespoons chia seeds (optional, but recommended)
- Extra seeds for topping — sesame, poppy, sunflower, or a mix
Method
- Preheat your oven to 180°C and line a baking sheet with baking paper.
- Pour the baking mix into a bowl and add the chia seeds if using.
- Mix the baking mix as per the instructions on the packet — paying attention to the egg whisking step, as the air you incorporate is what gives the buns their light, airy texture.
- Roughly divide the mixture into 6 equal portions and quickly shape each one into an oval form. Place onto the lined baking sheet — they hold their shape well so don't overthink it.
- Sprinkle extra seeds or flavourings over the top of each bun and cover loosely with tin foil.
- Bake exactly as described on the packet instructions.
- Allow to cool completely before slicing and serving.
Tips & Tricks
- Add seeds to the top — not only does it look impressive, it adds an extra layer of nutrition and flavour. Sesame seeds are classic for burger buns; poppy seeds work beautifully too.
- Don't overhandle the dough — these buns don't rise like a traditional yeast bun. The air from whisking your eggs is what gives them their texture, so shape them quickly and leave them alone.
- Need a little extra lift? Add an extra egg to the mix.
- Grill them — slice in half and pop under the grill with cheese for a few minutes. Absolutely next level.
- Chia seeds add a lovely texture and bind the bun slightly better — worth adding if you have them.
Serving Ideas
- Classic beef burger with all the toppings
- Pulled pork or chicken burger
- Grilled cheese — slice, butter, and grill until golden
- Smashed avo and poached eggs for a weekend brunch
- Deli-style with your favourite cold cuts and mustard
